Euro 2020 results: Fernando Santos talks about Portugal's defeat to Germany

Portugal's coach Fernando Santos (L) reacts during the UEFA EURO 2020 Group F football match between Portugal and Germany at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, on June 19, 2021. Fernando Santos reveals the cause of Portugal's defeat.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos has pocketed the cause of his team's humiliating defeat to Germany by a score of 2-4 in the second match of Group F Euro 2020.

According to Fernando Santos, Portugal can start the game with its best game.

Even Portugal could take advantage of a counter-attack to become the opening goal through the feet of Cristiano Ronaldo who took advantage of Diogo Jota's assist.

But Portugal's best game could no longer last for 45 minutes of the first half.

Germany midfielder Serge Gnabry (2ndR) celebrates scoring his team's second goal with Germany forward Kai Havertz (2ndL) during the UEFA EURO 2020 Group F football match between Portugal and Germany at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, on June 19, 2021.

The Portugal squad had to be willing to have their lead equalized to 1-1 due to an own goal scored by Ruben Diaz.

Not long ago another Portuguese defender, Raphael Guerreiro also scored an own goal against his own goal

Guerreiro's own goal seemed to be a turning point for Germany, who ended the first half with a 1-2 lead.

We got off to a good start, with excellent game organization, looking to attack and fight, gaining some connections between players. Santos said quoted from the UEFA 2020 website.

We made good use of the counter-attack, which was one of those moments when we knew they were going to struggle.

Germany were better but we had a foothold in the game. We had a second chance on the counter-attack which could have been a goal and it could have turned out differently.

The 66-year-old coach admitted to making several changes in the team to catch up with his team.

But it ended in disaster when Germany was able to increase their advantage with 2 goals within 10 minutes in the second half.

Both goals for Germany against Rui Patricio were made by Kai Havertz and Robin Gosens.

Havertz and Gosens goals are considered by Santos to be the cause of his team's defeat and the Selecao das Quinas squad is said to be shaken because they are falling further behind.

Even so, Portugal can still show its struggle to catch up.

It was seen when Diogo Jota was able to continue Ronaldo's bait to reduce the position.

Unfortunately, Jota's goal and the Selecao's match in the remainder of the second half could not catch up with Germany.

Germany's 2-4 victory was also considered deserved.

After the first half I tried to change it but we ended up conceding the third and fourth goals.

We reduced it to 4-2, we had the ball against the post, one or two chances, but Germany also created danger.

It was a fair victory for Germany.

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo (L) greets Portugal coach Fernando Santos (R) at the end of the UEFA EURO 2020 Group F football match between Portugal and Germany at the Allianz Arena in Munich on June 19, 2021.

With this result, Germany crawled up to second place in Group F Euro 2020 standings with 3 points.

While Portugal dropped to third with the acquisition of the same points owned by Germany.

In the final match of Group F Euro 2020, Portugal will challenge France, which is now at the top of the standings.

Then Germany met Hungary who were at the bottom of Group F Euro 2020.

We have to see this game and now all we have to do is clear our heads.

Because we have a very important game against France.
